Täckating 2024
- Join us in preserving a Gotlandic cultural tradition! -
For almost 60 years Gotland's nation has, together with the island of Fårö's Roof Thatching Team arranged an annual event of täckating on Fårö. As usual the event takes place the first weekend of august. Your very welcome to join!
Gotland's nation contributes to the täckating by organizing breakfast, lunch and a celebratory dinner and dance at Fårö Bygdegård (the village hall) on Saturday 3rd August. On Friday 2nd August we make the preparations for Saturday and Sunday 4th August is devoted to returning the bydgegård back to normal. It's an experience one shouldn't miss and a great opportunity to learn more about Gotland and gotlandic traditions.
What is 'täckating' (roughly "thatching")? During a 'täckating' both those with experience and amateurs gather to thatch a traditional swamp sawgrass roof, with floowing celebrations. The word ”ating” is gutnish and means a group of people who perform a task in exchange for food, drink and a celebratory activities. This tradition from the old farmer society lives on thanks to Fårö's Thatching Team and the students from Gotland's Nation in Uppsala.
Does it sound fun? Note the dates! More information about times, tickets and costs will come closer to the summer. If you have any questions, you can contact the First Curator at 1q@gotlandsnation.se.
