Hi!

My name is Erika Helin and I am running as a candidate for the position of Kitchen master spring semester 2021.

 

In the autumn of 2016, I moved from the Åland Islands and settled in Uppsala to study. Already during the summer, my friend Alfred had convinced me to join Gotlands nation. By then I only knew that the nations were a big part of student life in Uppsala, but without really knowing much more than that, I became a member of Gotlands nation. It took a while before I had my first position at the nation, which was a study fika host. Since then, I have also been a weekend fika host and this semester is my second one as rental responsible. I’ve also been a member of committees, worked in the pub and assisted in the kitchen. During my time here, Gotlands has become my second home and I’ve gotten to know many of my closest friends through the nation.

Why do I want to become Kitchen master? I’ve been interested in food in general for quite a long time, and diet and health in particular. My studies here in Uppsala have been in food science and nutrition. My interest in health aside, I also love tasty food! So you don’t have to worry, even if I were to become Kitchen master, the burgers would remain on the pub  menu!

What I bring with me from my studies into my role as a potential Kitchen master is theoretical knowledge in e.g. food safety, menu planning and special diets. On the other hand, I don’t have much practical experience of working with this, but I look forward to learning. Gaining confidence as Kitchen master would also feel fun as well as challenging since it would mean that I get to connect my knowledge in food with everything I have learned so far about the nation.
